Alberto María is a Dominican salsa singer whose voice fronted the two orchestras that defined Dominican salsa in the 2010s. He arrived there the long way — through ferry house bands, copy bands and choir microphones — and when the new Dominican salsa exploded, he was at the front of it twice: first with Chiquito Team Band, then with Revolución Salsera, the group he co-founded. Since 2019 he has carried that repertoire as a soloist.
The long apprenticeship
Before the fame, Alberto María served one of the fullest apprenticeships in Dominican popular music. He began in copy bands, then spent some six years from 2005 with Grupo Chabelly, the house orchestra of Ferry del Caribe, working as both singer and güirero. He passed through La Boba Band and the bands of Antonio González and Miguelito Leclerc, spent two years (2010–2012) in Ramón Orlando's Orquesta Internacional, and sang backing vocals for Yiyo Sarante, David Kada and El Clasicom — a grounding in merengue and salsa alike that few of his generation can match.
Chiquito Team Band
In 2012 he joined Chiquito Team Band as part of its first vocal front, alongside Kelvin Saviñón and Lugo Santana — the front line, though not the founders, of the band led by Rafael Berroa and Enmanuel Frías. His recordings of those years, «Volveré» (2012) and «Corazón Salvaje», became signatures of the new Dominican salsa, and in 2014 the band won the Premios Soberano for Revelación del Año. He left in 2015, at the height of the group's rise.
Revolución Salsera
That same year he co-founded Revolución Salsera with Saviñón and Santana, fronting the spin-off on its album «La Nueva Era» and winning a second Soberano Revelación del Año in 2016. The group's defining recording was «No Hay Sombra» (2017), sung by Alberto María — the song his audience still names as his biggest. He left in January 2019, declining to renew his contract, and within weeks launched his solo career.
Solo
His solo debut, «La misma piedra» (February 2019), set the pattern of a singles-based catalogue: «Sopa de Caracol», which went viral on TikTok during the pandemic, «Tan Adentro de Mi Alma», and «Por Ella» (2024), recorded with Yiyo Sarante. In 2026 he toured the United States with Saviñón and Santana under the billing «Ex Revolución Salsera» — the old front line, reunited by the repertoire they built together.
Legacy
Alberto María's career maps the rebirth of Dominican salsa: the genre's two emblematic orchestras of the 2010s both carried his voice at the front, and both won the Soberano's newcomer prize with him in place. «Volveré» and «No Hay Sombra» remain reference points of the movement, and his path — from güirero in a ferry's house band to the front of the salsa revolución — is one of the clearest working-musician stories of his generation.
