Ángela Altagracia Carrasco Rodríguez was born on January 23, 1951, in Montecristi, a province in the northwestern Dominican Republic. Her connection to music began remarkably early — at just seven years old, she made her first public appearance in an advertising spot, performing a jingle for a beverage composed by Salvador Sturla. That early spark would set the course for one of Latin music's most enduring careers.

As a teenager, she began offering guitar lessons at a local music school alongside her sisters, a formative period that helped shape her musical foundation. By her mid-teens, she had already stepped in front of the camera as the host of a television program called "Orbit," and later gained wider attention through a popular contest show known as "Cascade of Success." A scholarship eventually opened the door to Europe, and she relocated to Spain — a move that would transform her career entirely.

In Spain, her breakthrough came when she was cast as Mary Magdalene opposite Camilo Sesto in the first Spanish-language staging of *Jesus Christ Superstar* in the mid-1970s. The role introduced her to an enormous audience and positioned her among a celebrated generation of Latin American divas that included Iris Chacón, Ednita Nazario, Yolandita Monge, and Rocío Dúrcal.

Her recording career flourished in the late 1970s, with tracks like "Cariño mío" and "Quererte a ti" reaching listeners across Latin America, the United States, and Europe. She later recorded notable albums including *Dama del Caribe* and *La Candela*, the latter featuring a celebrated duet with Celia Cruz.

In 1987, Carrasco moved to the United States, where she released "Boca Rosa" and "Piel Canela," earning both Billboard and Lo Nuestro awards as best tropical singer of the year. The *Boca Rosa* album reached number one on the US Billboard Latin Pop Albums chart in 1988.
