Berenice Álvarez — on stage simply Berenice — is a Dominican singer who built her career the slow way: television contests, revue stages and hotel theaters. In 2009 Dominican press called hers one of the most privileged voices of her generation, at home in English and Spanish alike — and the documented record backs the range.
A contest, a revue, a hotel stage
Her first documented triumph came on television: first place in «Buscando el Éxito», the talent segment of Roberto Ángel Salcedo's «9x9 Roberto» on Color Visión, singing «El amor» by Yolandita Monge. Then came the «Revista Kandelá», choreographer Chiqui Haddad's revue, where she was lead singer, and one of the country's most demanding stages: for more than five years she sang at the Hotel Jaragua's Teatro La Fiesta, before international audiences. In her own account, given decades later on El Show de Silvio, she describes herself as a trained soprano who sang in female orchestras and toured Spain and France; no era press source confirms that chapter, and it stands as her testimony.
Solo, in bachata
By 2009 Berenice had gone solo in the least expected genre: bachata, fronting her own twelve-musician band and releasing under her own company, BMP Music Production, with manager Cuchy Morales. The Asociación Nacional de Disc Jockeys named her its «Revelación del Año»; her album «Dulzura de Mujer» circulated while a more international production with songs by Charlie Mosquea was in preparation. How much of that push reached the public is hard to trace today: her records left almost no trace in the digital catalogs, and the surviving documentation is thin.
Legacy
Berenice's legacy is that of a working Dominican stage singer of the old school — contest winner, revue lead, five years a hotel headliner — who then bet on herself as a solo bachatera with her own band and her own label. Her 2025 appearance on El Show de Silvio found an audience ready to celebrate her, proof of how long such careers echo. The honest record is incomplete: dates, places and tracklists remain to be documented, and this biography prints only what could be verified.
