Biography
César Flores is a Dominican merengue singer from San Francisco de Macorís, in the country's Cibao region. He took his stage surname from the river that runs through his hometown: known as "El Hijo del Jaya" — the son of the Jaya — he built a solo career in the first half of the 1990s and placed one song, «Salvaje», so firmly in the merengue repertoire that it kept travelling on compilations long after his own albums stopped coming.
A voice from the Jaya
Flores came up singing in San Francisco de Macorís, where listeners remember a high, plaintive tenor working the local venues before the records started. His documented solo career opens in 1992 with a debut album under his own name, «César Flores», billed with his own orchestra. A track from that first period, «Quiero Verla», was already crossing borders by 1993, licensed onto a BMG Ariola de Colombia compilation — an early sign that his voice carried outside the Cibao.
«Salvaje»
The breakthrough came in 1994 with his second album, «El Hijo Del Jaya», released by Prime Entertainment and distributed in the United States through BMG/RCA. Its defining track was «Salvaje», written by Juan Marcelo and sung by Flores with the urgency that became his trademark. The record worked in the US Latin market as well as at home: in August 1994 «Salvaje» reached No. 7 on the Cash Box New York Top 25, spending ten weeks on the chart, and placed on the Los Angeles chart as well. The song's afterlife was longer than the album's: it was licensed onto «Merengue Mix 2» and onto «Merengue en la Calle 8 '95», keeping Flores's voice in circulation through the decade's big merengue packages.
The later records
Flores continued recording through the 1990s — «Opus 3», «Octubre» and «Muy Especial...» are the titles his catalogue lists for those years — and returned with «Nostalgias de Domingo» in 2016 and «Bola E' Fuego» in 2020. In 2024 he signed with Go-Latino Records and released the single «Niña de Domingo»; the label later gathered his catalogue into the compilation «Éxitos Vol. 1», which pairs the best-known titles with material such as «Cosas de la Vida» and «Lluvia de Pelotas».
Legacy
César Flores's career is a reminder that the 1990s merengue boom had a second tier of genuine hitmakers below the superstar names: singers with one song strong enough to outlive its album. «Salvaje» is that song — a Juan Marcelo composition that Flores made his own, charted in New York and Los Angeles in the summer of 1994, and carried, under his name, through three decades of compilations. He remains the voice of the Jaya in the merengue record.
