Dahian El Apechao — born Luis Daniel Frías Féliz in Villa Altagracia, in the Dominican province of San Cristóbal — is a pianist, arranger and singer-songwriter who carried Dominican merengue onto the world's biggest pop stages. Trained at the piano from childhood and seasoned in the bands of a dozen merengue stars, he built his own orchestra around a fusion of traditional merengue and urban music, and then did the thing that made him famous: he co-produced and arranged the merengue inside Bad Bunny's «Después de la playa» and played it, live, all the way to the Grammy Awards.
From a children's festival to the top bands
Dahian's piano story starts at age ten, when he won first place at the Festival Infantil de la Voz and the prize was a year's piano scholarship. The instrument stuck. His first piano work came with the Christian group Sabor a Cristo, and his reputation as a self-taught phenomenon grew until Ramón Orlando himself publicly urged him to study music formally — "you have too much talent… it is important that they study" — while calling him a phenomenon. Through the following years he was the pianist behind a roll call of merengue and típico headliners: Kewdy de los Santos, Tito Swing, Ala Jazá, Krisspy, Cherito and Aramis Camilo among them.
His own swing
In 2016 he launched his solo project under the banner "¡Merengue con Swing!", fusing traditional merengue with merengue urbano and fronting his own orchestra as singer and pianist. The first singles, «Sufrir» and «Puesto pa' lo mío», were his own writing and arrangements — the sound of a sideman stepping to the front of the stage without leaving the piano behind.
«Después de la playa»
The turning point reached him from outside merengue. For Bad Bunny's «Un verano sin ti» (2022), Dahian was one of the producers — alongside MAG, La Paciencia and Elikai — of «Después de la playa», the full-throated merengue that closes the album; the song's own lyric shouts his name: "Ando con El Apechao." He then took the song on the road, joining the World's Hottest Tour with his full orchestra for its Latin American leg in late 2022 and closing the concerts with it. On 5 February 2023 he performed it with Bad Bunny in the opening of the 65th Grammy Awards in Los Angeles — a moment Dominican press celebrated by presenting him as the first Dominican and the first merenguero to perform at the American Grammys, and that Juan Luis Guerra praised publicly, noting it was the first time a merengue was presented at an American Grammy and saluting the pianist-arranger at its centre. In November 2025 he returned to Bad Bunny's stage as the special guest of the Santo Domingo concert, performing the song again.
Legacy
Dahian El Apechao's legacy is a bridge built in both directions: he took the discipline of the merengue orchestra — the piano chair he occupied for other stars for years — into global pop, and he brought global pop's audience back to a Dominican rhythm played by a Dominican band. Between the live album «El Apechao En Concierto 2021 (En Vivo)» and the 2025 «Ensamble Etéreo» session, his own catalogue is still young; his defining credit, the co-production of «Después de la playa», already stands as the moment merengue urbano's house pianist stepped into music history.
