Biography

Felipe Jorge is a Dominican merengue singer whose name survives the way the voices of the great orchestras often do: attached to a handful of performances that listeners refuse to forget. He was one of the two singers maestro Félix del Rosario chose when he rebuilt his orchestra in the early 1980s, and his renditions of «Yo Renaceré» and «El Campesino» became the calling cards of that band's second life.

The Félix del Rosario years

When Félix del Rosario dissolved Los Magos del Ritmo and formed the Santo Domingo All Star Band, he brought in new voices — Nicky Soul and Felipe Jorge, in the words of the maestro's 2012 obituary in the Dominican entertainment press, which singles out «El Campesino» and «Yo Renaceré», a ballad adapted to merengue, as the themes that showed what the new singers could do. The orchestra was later renamed Grupo Félix, and under that name it cut «Merengue con Clase!» (1984), whose tracklist — «Pin Pun Como Tú», «Mami No Relajes», «Ya No Tiene Ganas» among them — is the repertoire Jorge is remembered by. Archival television footage from 1986 shows him fronting the band on «Ya No Tiene Ganas» and on «Yo Renaceré», the performance that classic-merengue channels still circulate under his name. The record does not preserve which singer leads each track of the album, and no solo career followed: his documented life in music is this one chapter, inside Félix del Rosario's orchestra.

A voice found again

For decades that chapter was all there was — until the interviewers came looking. In 2025 and 2026 Jorge sat for cameras again, telling Joan Abreu Entrevistas in a four-part conversation how he joined Félix del Rosario's orchestra, and receiving a biographical tribute from República Merengue, which traces his beginnings to 1964, singing in a school choir in Santo Domingo. The full record of his life remains unwritten — no biography fixes his birth or his full name — but the man himself is here, remembering.

Legacy

Felipe Jorge's legacy is the merengue orchestra system itself, heard from the singer's chair: a voice good enough for Félix del Rosario to rebuild around, preserved on one classic album and a few broadcasts that fans keep rescuing. When the Joan Abreu caption lists his hits — «Campesino», «Mami No Relajes», «Yo Renaceré» — it is simply repeating what the dancers of 1986 already knew.
