Biography

Gina D'Alessandro is a Dominican singer associated with the ballad and romantic-song repertoire of the 1980s. She represented the Dominican Republic at the 1985 OTI Festival with «Con las alas rotas», written by Cheo Zorrilla, and subsequently participated in recording projects in the Dominican Republic and Italy.

The OTI Festival

On September 21, 1985, she performed «Con las alas rotas» at the Teatro Lope de Vega in Seville, Spain, during the fourteenth OTI Song Festival. Bertico Sosa conducted for the Dominican entry. Her appearance belongs to the audiovisual record of the contest, whose broadcast is preserved in the «RTVE» archive.

Dominican song recordings

On the collective LP «La música de sus versos», produced by Ricardo Bello for «Disco Bello», she sang «Amor romántico», with poetry by Joaquín Balaguer and music by Cheo Zorrilla. The back cover also lists her among the Dominican singers performing «Paz», with music by Carlos Mario Echenique. The Archivo General de la Nación preserves the album and its original artwork.

Her interpretations of Cheo Zorrilla also included «Cama» and «Loca». Both recordings are mentioned in a 2006 account of a tribute to the composer organized by the Sociedad General de Autores, Compositores y Editores Dominicanos de Música. They document a repertoire extending beyond her OTI appearance.

«Coco de agua» and Italian production

In 1992 «Coco de agua», credited to «Gina y Kiko Band», appeared on an Italian twelve-inch vinyl edition issued by «Café Latino», catalog number CAF 002. Its back cover identifies Gina D'Alessandro as lead vocalist and credits Roberto Ferrante and Kiko Pensato with production, arrangements, and mixing. The record contains four versions, including «Extended Mix», «Ginappella», and «Radio Mix», documenting her participation in a dance production featuring Latin instrumentation.

Legacy

Her career connects the Ibero-American song festival, settings of Dominican poetry, and dance recording in Italy. In a 2016 interview, illustrator Gaby D’Alessandro recalled her aunt Gina as a singer in the 1980s and a creative influence during childhood; the publication linked to «Coco de agua» when identifying her. This family testimony adds another perspective to the record preserved in her performances and recordings.
