Biography

The history of Rikarena can be told in many ways, but it always comes back to the same voice. Henry Trinidad was not the creator of the group or its owner — that was Kinito Méndez — but when the project reached the public in 1994, he was at the front, alongside Shiro Méndez, and three decades later he is still there. In an orchestra genre whose lineups turn over every few seasons, that permanence is rare.

A project with three kinds of founders

Rikarena was Kinito Méndez's idea. In 1994 the established merenguero assembled a group of young talent around a concept of romantic, danceable, up-to-the-minute merengue — and, famously, never performed in it himself: he created, owned and produced it from outside the stage. The voices he put in front were Henry Trinidad and Shiro Méndez, the group's founding singers. And the sound of the first records was built with arranger and co-producer Víctor Manuel de la Cruz — Beko Guira — whose credits run across the first three albums. Creator, founding voices, musical architect: three roles that later retellings often blur into one, but the sleeves keep them separate.

The debut and the Casandra

The first album, «¡Sacúdelo Que Tiene Arena!» (1994, J&N Records / EMI Latin), carried the repertoire Dominican press still names as the group's signature: «Merengue Riko», «Te Dejé De Querer» and «El Juramento» are all on that record, sung by the young front Trinidad shared with Shiro Méndez. In 1995 Rikarena won Revelación del Año at the Premios Casandra. «Mas Rika Que Nunca» (1995) and «Sin Medir Distancia...» (1997) consolidated the formula, and the group's market turned out to be bigger abroad than at home: Rikarena conquered Venezuela, Colombia and Puerto Rico, and in time established its base in Colombia.

The voice that stayed

Lineups shifted around 1998 and members came and went, but the front did not change hands: three decades on, Rikarena's founding voices — Trinidad and Shiro Méndez — still lead the group on the reunion circuit, through albums that ran to «Pa' Rato» (2004) and a catalog that compilations keep in print. In a genre of orchestras rebuilt around whoever is newest, that permanence is itself the distinction.

Legacy

Henry Trinidad's legacy is continuity: he is the sound Rikarena had when it arrived — the romantic front voice of «Te Dejé De Querer» and «El Juramento», a Casandra-winning debut and a career spent proving that the singer a creator trusts at the start can still be the singer the public wants at the end. Kinito Méndez built the project; Trinidad is the voice it was built around.
