Biography

Jorge Morel was one of the most accomplished guitarists the Dominican Republic has ever produced, a classical musician whose technical mastery and compositional gifts earned him an international reputation over a career spanning more than half a century. Born in Santo Domingo in 1931, Morel showed musical aptitude from an early age and eventually pursued training that placed him within the lineage of the great classical guitar tradition.

He became known both for his virtuosic performances of established repertoire and for his own compositions, which blended classical structure with Latin rhythmic vitality in ways that were immediately recognizable as his own. Morel spent significant portions of his career in the United States, teaching and performing while remaining deeply connected to his Dominican heritage. His recordings documented a refined and expressive approach to the guitar that influenced generations of Latin American classical guitarists.

He passed away in 2021 at the age of ninety, having dedicated nine decades to an instrument he mastered completely and an art he served with uncommon devotion.
