Biography

Kiko el Presidente, the stage name of Francisco Manuel Álvarez, is a Dominican singer and bandleader born in Mao, Valverde Province. He broke through with «La Playa» in 2007 and became a prominent voice in contemporary merengue típico. His music retains the genre’s rhythmic foundation while using arrangements and stage presentation aimed at newer audiences.

From Mao to merengue típico

As a schoolboy he loved singing but was too shy to perform for classmates, so he sang popular songs in secluded places. His grandfather José Olivo played tambora in several groups. At 18, Álvarez formed the merengue orchestra «La Madera Band» in Mao and later worked with «Narciso y su Fuerza Típica». He had recorded more than ten songs before finding a wider audience.

La Playa and national recognition

«La Playa» changed the reach of his career in 2007, taking his merengue típico beyond its Cibao base. He won the 2008 Casandra Award for Typical Ensemble of the Year and gave a large homecoming concert in Mao called «Kiko pa'l pueblo». Alongside Krisspy, he helped bring a new phase of the genre to audiences across the country. In 2013 the Ministry of Tourism honored him in Mao for his career and contribution to merengue típico.

Recordings and later work

His repertoire includes «Por el centro», «La llave», «La banana», «Sé que te amaré» and «La noche». In 2017 he presented «Romántico», featuring «Pena» and «Fiesta», the latter with Shelow Shaq. He promoted «El tabaco» from the 2019 release «El Tabaco 2k19». His later catalogue includes the live album «Con Su Permiso Vacano» (2023), further live recordings issued in 2024, and the 2026 single «Flores en mi vida», which he connected to a period of grief and renewal in his personal life.

Legacy

Kiko el Presidente carried a modernized approach to merengue típico from Mao to national and international stages. «La Playa» remains the song that defined his wider breakthrough, while his later work documents the continuing activity of his band and dance repertoire.
