Biography
La Ross María — born Rosa María Pineda Aguavivas on October 24, 2003 in Los Mina, Santo Domingo — is a Dominican singer and songwriter who became one of the country's most-watched young artists within months of starting. She had been rapping since fourteen; she turned professional in 2020 at sixteen, and by the end of that year had a duet with Romeo Santos and a song that had become one of the most watched Dominican recordings of the year.
Los Mina, and a contest she lost
Pineda grew up in Los Mina, on the eastern side of Santo Domingo, and came to music through rap and freestyle rather than song. She has said she started singing at fourteen and that rap was the harder road: not what Dominican audiences were listening for, and a risk she took deliberately.
Her first attempt at a break failed. A YouTube talent competition invited emerging artists to submit a cover, with the winner to record the track. She was the only woman to qualify among the new-talent finalists. The song went instead to El Alfa, with Nicky Jam and Ozuna. She has spoken about how much that stung — she had staked everything on it, and no one apologised.
2020
Months later she did not need the contest. Mi Regalo Más Bonito, released in 2020, went on to reach an audience almost no Dominican artist commands. Tú Vas A Tener Que Explicarme followed, its video framed as a pandemic love story — quarantine, a swab test, separation, reunion — and closing on a note about the people lost that year.
Then Romeo Santos heard it. She has described the chain plainly: someone on her team knew someone who had worked with him for years, that person told him to look at her, and thirty minutes later he called back. Two days after that he was on video with her. The remix of Tú Vas A Tener Que Explicarme with Santos was a major success and moved her into a different tier of visibility.
The arguments about the songs
Her rise was not uncomplicated. Mi Regalo Más Bonito was written, she said, for women to learn to value themselves and for men to learn how to treat them, but its lines about a man who could have five hundred women while only one truly loves him read to many listeners as the opposite of that. A wave of parody versions appeared on TikTok, rewriting the chorus back at her.
The Santos remix drew sharper criticism. She was seventeen; the lyrics make the age difference explicit, with Santos singing that he will not risk involvement until she turns twenty-one and cannot so much as kiss her, and her replying that she will wait a couple of years or ask her parents' permission. The song placed a very young woman inside a much older convention in Latin popular music, and the objection was made loudly at the time. Both things are true of her breakthrough year, and both belong in the record of it.
The catalogue
The songs that followed have been consistent in register — romantic, direct, built for streaming. 50/50 and Mi Plan Contigo were both substantial hits, Quiero Verte and Tus Besos close behind, alongside Tu Foto, El Heladero, Solamente Tú, COMOFUE?, migajas and Moneda. She recorded AY AY with NTG and a remix of Estoy Perdido with El Chaval de la Bachata, and has worked with Amara la Negra and Nino Freestyle.
Abre La Puerta, released in 2025, became her largest hit since the debut year, the video and a live session both widely watched. Antes y Después followed in October 2025 and Me Pregunto in 2026.
