Biography

Laura Rivera is a Dominican singer-songwriter and actress born on December 19 in Santo Domingo. She became known as the voice of Tribu del Sol and subsequently built a career spanning rock, ballads, jazz and musical theater. She sings with «Retro Jazz» while maintaining a solo project of original songs and collaborations.

Early work and Tribu del Sol

She began working in singing and acting at six, appearing in jingles, children's productions, commercials and theater. Producers she worked with included Manuel Tejada and Pengbian Sang. In 1997 she became the vocalist of Tribu del Sol alongside Rafa Payán and Papolo Pumarol. The band's first album, «Buscando una razón», appeared in 1998, including «Búscame», «Ni siquiera el sol», «No me dejes morir» and «Por ti». Press accounts document a favorable selection of the album by «Billboard» Latin editor John Lannert and a Premio Casandra for Rock Group of the Year for the band.

The Retro Jazz experience

In 2011 she joined «Retro Jazz» as its founding vocalist. Led by Pengbian Sang, the project reinterprets the Dominican songbook through jazz. She sang on «Jazzeando el Cancionero Dominicano, Vol. 1», released in 2013 and awarded Album of the Year at the 2014 Premios Soberano. After a period outside the lineup, she officially returned in 2024 and performed Juan Luis Guerra's «Te propongo» on the series' fourth volume. She also appeared on «Jazzeando el Cancionero Dominicano En Vivo», issued in 2025.

Solo recordings and «Despertar»

She launched her solo project in 2016 with «Más que ayer», written by Vicente García. On April 3, 2020, she released her first solo album, «Despertar», produced by Rafa Payán and co-produced by Rivera, with distribution through «La Oreja Media Group». Its ten songs include duets with Haydée Milanés and Pavel Núñez, with whom she recorded «Casita». Fans helped finance the record through crowdfunding. Her repertoire includes «Da tristeza», «Te quiero ver» and «Te he perdido», which she also performed in a live recording with Maridalia Hernández.

Theater and new songs

As an actress she has played leading roles in «Esperanza el musical» and «Legally Blonde», and in 2024 she appeared in «Mamma Mia!». In 2026 she released «Villana», a contemporary bolero she wrote, produced by Peter Nova. That year she presented «Todo lo que soy», a four-concert residency at the Teatro Nacional's Café Teatro Juan Lockward, exploring her work as a singer, actress and rock performer.

Legacy

From Tribu del Sol's pop rock to Dominican songbook interpretations and her solo work, Rivera has developed a career centered on vocal performance. Her work brings together band experience, songwriting and the expressive resources of musical theater across different repertoires and stages.
