Santuario is a Dominican heavy metal and hard rock band formed in Santo Domingo in 1999. Founded by drummer Juan Carlos "Kanky" Lora and vocalist and guitarist Jehison Tavárez, with guitarist Robin Valdéz and bassist Omar Núñez completing the lineup, the group has spent over two decades as one of the most resilient exponents of the Caribbean underground rock circuit.

Foundations and early underground recognition

Formed at the close of the 1990s in a country where rock received minimal commercial infrastructure or institutional media backing, Santuario built its reputation on stage. In 2003, the group gained national attention during a high-profile tribute at the Hotel Jaragua, where Tony Almont of Toque Profundo invited them to perform. Their explosive heavy rock delivery stood in stark contrast to the formal setting, establishing their signature style of high-octane performance and socially critical lyrics.

Brutalismo and Porque No Estoy Muerto Hoy

The band's early studio recordings were compiled on Brutalismo, anchored by the social anthem Aquí No Es, which featured a music video directed by Harold Martínez, as well as tracks like O.B.L. and Todavía Sigo de Pie. In 2008, Santuario released the EP Porque No Estoy Muerto Hoy, launching the record with a packed performance at the Auditorio del Domínico-Americano alongside Voces en el Plasma and Tears for Veronica. The release featured cornerstone songs including Asesino, Policía Estúpido, El Viaje (Cabeza de Motor) and Si Yo.

Re-recordings and El Costo de la Vida

In 2022, marking more than two decades of activity, the band re-entered the studio to produce updated 20-year anniversary versions of Brutalismo, Aquí No Es, O.B.L. and Todavía Sigo de Pie. In May 2024, commemorating the 40th anniversary of the 1984 social uprising known as La Poblada, Santuario released an official heavy rock version of El Costo de la Vida, the classic social merengue popularized by Juan Luis Guerra 4.40 in 1992. Featuring guest performances from prominent figures in Dominican rock, the adaptation recontextualized Guerra's economic critique through aggressive guitars and driving rhythms.
