Biography

Sin Fronteras are a Dominican merengue orchestra founded and led by Francis E. Contreras Figuereo, who works as Darys Contreras and is billed Dary-Darys. He was born on 23 February 1965.

Abriendo Caminos

The orchestra’s 1996 album Abriendo Caminos carried Mi Gran Noche, and that record is what put them on the map. Contreras produced it, arranged it and engineered it himself.

Mi Gran Noche is a Spanish standard, and turning it into a merengue is a specific kind of raid — taking a song the whole Spanish-speaking world already knows and giving it back at a Dominican tempo. It worked well enough that the publishing still sits with a Spanish house.

Qué Bonito followed in 1997, with Tanto Amor, written by Jean Carlos Núñez and arranged by Contreras.

The elegance

They bill themselves as the elegance of merengue, and the description fits what a working orquesta is for: a full horn section, arrangements written down, and a lead singer who can be replaced without the band losing its sound.

That model is the harder one to sustain. An orchestra costs a dozen salaries a night, and by the late nineties the country was already moving toward the cheaper formats that would become merengue de calle.

Still working

They spent years working outside the country, including New York, and returned to Santo Domingo at the end of the 2010s to retake the market they had won in the nineties. El Caribe covered the return in 2019 and the Dominican press covered the renewal again in 2025.

Reymond Durán sings for them now, and Gozando, cut with Los Hermanos Rosario, is among the recent records.
