Biography
Tony Almont, born 13 September 1955 in Herrera, Santo Domingo, is a Dominican singer, guitarist, songwriter and actor, best known as the founding lead voice of Toque Profundo, the country's longest-running rock band.
Before Toque Profundo
Almont studied at university and worked as a singer on stages in Cabarete and elsewhere before 1989, when the keyboardist Lorenzo Zayas-Bazán and the drummer Máximo Gómez recruited the guitarist Leo Susana to help put together a band for that year's Rock Olympiad; Susana agreed on one condition, that Almont sing. The four wrote their first songs, formed the band and won the Olympiad within two weeks, the start of Toque Profundo.
Toque Profundo
As Toque Profundo's singer and guitarist, Almont has fronted the band for more than three decades, through two Premios Casandra for Best Rock Group, in 1992 and 2012. When the band slowed down in the early 2000s he kept performing through the side projects Las Marías and Diagonal B, and he has also recorded as a member of Recolector, an alternative metal project with the Mexican musician Lino Nava.
Acting
Alongside music, Almont has worked steadily as an actor since the 1990s. He played a conga-playing band member in León Ichaso's «Azúcar Amarga» (1996), the same film that carried Toque Profundo's own «Viajero» on its soundtrack, and went on to roles in «Víctimas del Poder» (1998), «Noche de Circo» (2013), the American creature feature «Sharktopus vs. Whalewolf» (2015), «Sálvame» (2016) and «La Familia» (2024). His character Willy, introduced in the short «Bajo la Sombra de la Sangre», returned in the 2025 feature «In a Hail of Bullets».
Solo work
Almont released his first recording under his own name in 2018 and has continued performing apart from the band in acoustic, bohemio-style concerts, among them «Noche Bohemia» in November 2025 and a solo set titled «Solo» in 2026.
Legacy
More than any single record, it is Almont's voice, fronting Toque Profundo since the week the band was formed, that Dominican rock has measured itself against for over three decades, and fans and fellow musicians alike still introduce him, without much exaggeration, as the genre's living legend in the country.
