Biography

Asdrúbar —Asdrúbar Stefan Báez Domínguez, born 26 July 1974 in Santo Domingo— is a Dominican singer of romantic salsa from the Villa Consuelo neighborhood, regarded as one of the genre's strongest voices in the country.

From Villa Consuelo

He grew up in Villa Consuelo and has said he chose salsa because it was the genre most heard in his neighborhood. He has worked across his career with arrangers and musical directors including Diego Gale, Juan José Bernal, Víctor Waill, Sony Ovalles and Juan Valdez.

«Contigo» and the songs that followed

His first single, «Contigo» (2001), put him near the top of the salsa charts and launched his recording career. He followed it with songs that have stayed in circulation since, among them «Suelta Mi Mano», «Viento de Otoño», «Crónica de un Viejo Amor», «Porque Me Falta Todo», «La Tumba del Amor» and «Aléjate de Mí»; the video for «Viento de Otoño» addresses gender violence. He recorded a tribute to Ismael Rivera, «El Incomprendido», and «Prueba de Amor» with the rapper Papi Sánchez. In 2020 he released «Fue un Ayer», a salsa adaptation of a Beatles song previously popularized in the Dominican Republic by Camboy Estévez, produced with Directive Films; during the pandemic he was seen delivering aid to DJs left without work. He has received multiple Premios Casandra/Soberano nominations.

On stage

He has sung in the Dominican community of New York and at events in Texas, appeared among the salsa artists announced for a tribute to Cuco Valoy, and in a January 2025 interview with El Nuevo Diario said he does not record songs for the sake of it, letting quality and feeling guide his interpretations. As of his own artist profile, he continues working on new material with Venezuelan and Colombian arrangers.

Legacy

Asdrúbar's work belongs to the Dominican line of romantic salsa, built on a run of songs from «Contigo» onward that remain staples of the format.
