Conjunto Quisqueya is a Dominican merengue group formed in 1972 by Dominican students at the University of Puerto Rico, one of the most recognizable merengue acts to reach an international audience from outside the Dominican Republic itself.

To meet women

Aneudy Díaz and Adib Melgen started the group, by Melgen’s own account, to meet women and get drinks; Javish Victoria and Chuky Acosta joined soon after to complete the four-man lineup that made the group famous. They debuted in 1972 on Puerto Rico’s «Show de las 12», on Channel 2, and released their first album the following year, produced by the Puerto Rican television and music producer Paquito Cordero. Having lived in Puerto Rico for years by then, all four singers were often mistaken for Puerto Ricans by their own countrymen on early tours back to the Dominican Republic.

«Los Limones», and «Dame la mano, Paloma»

After years working nightclubs, the group broke through internationally with «Los Limones», from the album «Aneudi y Chuky y su Conjunto Quisqueya: Que Bueno ’Ta este País». Through the late 1970s and 1980s, touring the Caribbean and returning constantly to Channel 2 in Puerto Rico, they built a catalogue of hits — «María Cristina», «La Juma», «Bebo hoy, bebo mañana», «Felicítame», «Lamento del soltero», «La banca borracha», «El brindis», «La trulla navideña», «Mi piel» and, best known of all, «Dame la mano, Paloma».

«La Llorona Loca»

In October 1992, mid-recording session, Aneudy Díaz complained of a headache to Chuky Acosta and fainted; taken to hospital, he was diagnosed with a terminal brain tumor. He finished recording the album, «La Llorona Loca», including its title track, and even toured and shot a video for the song before he died on 28 May 1993. The group took the following year off, after finishing concerts already under contract — Melgen has said they simply had no heart left to perform.

Legacy

Conjunto Quisqueya returned years later with a new lineup and has performed on and off ever since, including a «Noches de Navidad» concert in Santo Domingo in December 2021 — half a century after four young Dominicans in Puerto Rico picked up instruments for reasons that had nothing to do with music.
