Biography

Jorge Lewis is a Dominican merengue típico singer, the lead voice of El Grupaso and, before it, of Urbanda, the group he fronted for fourteen years. He began singing at seventeen or eighteen, at university, and has said it was shy and unplanned at first, until the audience's reaction to his first public performance convinced him to keep going.

Writers comparing típico frontmen to singers in other genres have placed him, for Urbanda, in the position Romeo Santos held for Aventura or El Torito for Toros Band. In October 2025 he left Urbanda together with the accordionist Julio Swing and the percussionist Ronald Tambora to form El Grupaso, telling Diario Libre that the new name gave the three of them room to work at a faster pace and with more creative freedom than the older structure allowed.
