Biography

Omega — Antonio Peter de la Rosa, born in Bonao on 17 January 1979 and billed Omega “El Fuerte” — is a Dominican singer and bandleader. He is one of the artists who built merengue urbano, and for a stretch of the 2000s and 2010s he was the biggest merenguero in the country.

Alpha y Omega

He grew up in the Pantoja neighbourhood of Santo Domingo and started in rap, forming his first group as a boy. In 1989 he was winning singing competitions with a group called Alpha y Omega, and that is where the name he has used ever since comes from.

He then built Omega y Su Mambo Violento, and the band’s first album came out on Allegro Music. Alante Alante was the record that broke him.

Merengue de calle

What he and his contemporaries made was merengue run through hip hop and R&B — faster, harder, built around the mambo section rather than the horn arrangement, and sung in the language of the street rather than the ballroom.

The Dominican music establishment did not like it. It was called merengue de calle as an insult before it was called merengue urbano as a description, and the argument over whether it counted as merengue at all ran for years in the Dominican press.

The argument is settled now. The form he helped make is what most of the world hears when it hears a Dominican record, and Pitbull and Shakira both borrowed from it.

Konvict

A Casandra came in 2009. In 2010 he attended the Latin Grammy Awards for the first time, played the Presidente festival, and toured the United States — the Manhattan Armory in New York, the Ritz in Elizabeth, New Jersey.

In 2011, through his producer Bismark Ayala, he was signed by Akon to Konvict Musik. Akon has said Omega was what gave him the Dominican market. The exchange went both ways: Merengue Electrónico, the record that followed, put merengue over an electronic floor, and the RIAA certified it platinum in the Latin field, as it did Si Te Vas.

The catalogue

El Dueño del Flow reached the upper end of Billboard’s Tropical Albums chart in 2009, and El Dueño del Flow 2 went gold in 2011. El Fuerte, En La Gran Mansión de Moca and Mi Libertad fill out the run.

He has kept turning up on other people’s records across two decades and several genres: Mi Alma Se Muere with Fuego and Pitbull in 2008, Dándole with Gocho and Jowell in 2011, Arranca with Becky G in 2023, and Kriminal with El Alfa and the Italian rapper Baby Gang in 2025.

That last list is the argument for his importance stated plainly. A merenguero from Bonao is who a Mexican-American pop singer and an Italian rapper call when they want the record to sound Dominican.
