Oro Sólido is a Dominican merengue group founded by Raúl Acosta in 1994. It came out of the New York and New Jersey diaspora rather than the island, and it has been working for more than thirty years.

Sound and style

Acosta was raised in New Jersey, shaping how the band sounds. The merengue is fast, short and built for a club rather than a ballroom, closer to what Proyecto Uno was doing in the same years than to an orchestra in Santo Domingo.

The records

Ta Caché and La Tanguita Roja are the two everyone knows. María Se Fue, El Baile del Beeper, Una Nalgadita, La Morena and Me Tiene Amarrao belong to the same run — dance records with a joke inside them, which is the register the group has never left.

The third album, Oro Sólido Internacional, arrived in March 1996 and carried La Tanga. El Baile del Beeper dates the catalogue precisely: a merengue named after a piece of technology that stopped existing.

Still working

They have not stopped. Chill Baby came with Tonio Skits, Ellos No Son Como Nosotros with Alex Sensation, and Mueva la Booty is the most recent single. The records go out through Wahoo Music and 24K Entertainment.

Three decades in, the act still tours the Dominican diaspora circuit that made it, from New York to Orlando to Honduras.
