The New York Band is one of the most influential groups in the history of modern merengue, and the one that best represented, from the mid-1980s onward, the sound and attitude of the Dominican diaspora in New York. With a proposal that combined merengue with disco, funk and danceable pop, along with choreography and costumes closer to international pop than to traditional merengue, the orchestra opened a new way of understanding the genre for the young audiences of the era.

Origins and Founding

The group was born in 1986 in New York City, driven by Dominican entrepreneur and artistic promoter Chery Jiménez y su Tercera Brigada, with the support of musicianWilfrido Vargas, whose name appeared alongside the orchestra's on the cover of their first album. It emerged as part of a wave of merengue groups formed by Dominicans based in that city, alongside projects like Jossie Esteban y La Patrulla 15, at a moment when the Dominican community in New York was seeking a band that reflected its own cultural identity.

First Lineup and Style

In its early years, the group's principal voice was singer Magda Lake. Shortly after, Irisneyda joined, originally from Santo Domingo, who had participated in a national talent competition before joining the orchestra. Musical direction and trombone were handled by Franklin Rivers, while Bolivita Quiñones provided the brass and woodwind sections and Anibalito Rijo handled keyboards and electric guitar. The group distinguished itself from the start through the quality of its instrumental execution and a choreographed stage presentation, with Alexandra as a notable dancer and backing vocalist.

Cherito's Arrival and Consolidation

In 1988, Cherito joined as a backing vocalist and soon became the lead voice. Along with Irisneyda, he became one of the main faces of the group, contributing his own compositions that quickly became part of the band's repertoire. Under this lineup, The New York Band came to be considered the first merengue orchestra seriously aimed at the concert and theatrical spectacle format, not just the dance hall circuit, which set it apart from other groups of its time.

Hits and International Reach

Their self-titled debut album, The New York Band (Karen Records, 1987), mixed merengue with disco, funk and pop rap, an unusual fusion for the genre at that moment. From there came songs like «Colé», featuring Magda Lake on lead vocals. With Cherito as frontman, the group solidified hits such as «Si tú no estás», «Nadie como tú» — which gave its name to their second album, released in 1989 — «Dame vida», «Si tú eres mi hombre», «Dancing Mood» and «Amada mía». The orchestra sold more than 2.5 million records and reached markets including Puerto Rico, the United States, Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela and Spain, winning recognition in several of those countries.

Lineup Changes and Dissolution

By the mid-1990s, internal tensions — including the decision to position Cherito as the group's primary face above the other members — were distancing the original members. Cherito stepped away from the group in 1995 to launch his own solo career, and although The New York Band continued to perform for a time with other members, it eventually formally disbanded in 1998, closing its most remembered era.

The 2016 Reunion

After 23 years without performing together, much of the original lineup — Irisneyda, Franklin Rivers, Magda Lake, Johnny Contreras, Cherito, Alexandra, Miosotis and Tony — reunited on May 31, 2016, at the National Theater, where the orchestra received the Soberano Merit Award. The performance generated a euphoric response from the audience and shortly after resulted in their own tour, the «Re:Encuentro World Tour», which once again brought the group to the most important stages in the country and across several Latin American cities.

After Cherito: Continuity and Disputes

Cherito's death in July 2019 left the orchestra without its most recognized face in recent decades and opened a dispute over the use of "The New York Band" name betweenChery Jiménez y su Tercera Brigada and several members who wished to continue performing under that brand. Despite this, the group, led by Irisneyda and Franklin Rivers, maintained its activity and offered in March 2021 its first virtual concert, «The New York Band para el mundo», with a lineup that included Johnny Contreras, Rubén Ariel, Tony Swing and newest member Maité, along with a special appearance by Alexandra as a guest.
