Agapito Pascual (born 24 June 1962), who bills himself as A lo Moderno, is a Dominican merengue típico accordionist, singer and composer. He came to the accordion the long way round — he was a tambora player first, and a good enough one as a teenager to be hired by the biggest names in the genre before he ever led anything of his own.

Early years and formation

He was born in La Balsa de La Isabela, in Puerto Plata, into a very poor family, and was working by the age of seven — in the fields and shining shoes. He started playing at seven as well, on the drum, and was good enough young enough that the musicians around him took notice. Six brothers in the family became musicians.

On tambora

By 1978 and 1979 he was being sought out by the established típico bands, playing for Francisco Ulloa, for Rafaelito Román, and for Bartolo Alvarado — the accordionist the country knows as El Cieguito de Nagua. Backing three bandleaders of that rank before turning twenty is an apprenticeship rather than a job, and it is where he learned the music from inside the rhythm section.

From drum to accordion

He then taught himself the accordion, which in merengue típico is the lead instrument and the one the group is named after, and formed his own conjunto in 1987. Moving from the back line to the front of a típico group is not a common route; most accordionists start on the accordion. He passed the instrument on: his sister Fidelina Pascual, who leads her own conjunto in New York as La Mami del Swing, learned it from him.

Mangú Records

He signed with Mangú Records in November 1997 and made three albums for the label: El Café en Pilón that same year, Muchachita Linda in November 1998, and El Mamón in 2000, cut at the Audio Enfi studios in Santiago. La Mujer Moderna, El Paquetazo de Mujeres and La Hija de La Vecina belong to the same body of work.

La Vieja y Su Pipa, El Café en Pilón, La Mujer Moderna, La Pobre Adela, La Moderna Agarradera, Lejos de Mí and El Joven Moderno are the ones that stayed in circulation. The titles run to the comic and the everyday, which is where típico has always done its best work.

Frente a Frente

Frente a Frente: Dos Estrellas en Uno pairs him against El Cieguito de Nagua across a single record — the head-to-head format típico has long used to put two accordionists in the same room. The man he had drummed behind two decades earlier was now on the other side of the billing.

A lo Moderno

The tag is his own and he uses it everywhere: on the records, in the song titles, as the name of his page. He works out of Miami now, and he has not stopped — El Palo Prendío came out in 2026, close to forty years after he first stood in front of his own conjunto. He and Fidelina still play together.
