Andy Andy, the stage name of Ángel Villalona, is a Dominican bachata singer, songwriter, and producer born on January 8 in Azua de Compostela. Known as «El Astro de la Bachata», he began his career in merengue before developing an international career in bachata. His best-known recordings include «Qué ironía», «Aquí conmigo», «Necesito un amor», «Voy a tener que olvidarte», and «Maldito amor».
From merengue to bachata
He moved to Santo Domingo to study law at the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo, combining his studies with performances in restaurants and hotels. In a 2007 Associated Press interview, he recalled leaving university before graduating to work with Alex Bueno. He settled in New York in 1995. Before joining Sony Music, he released three merengue records through independent labels, including «Por una mujer».
His bachata releases include «Aquí conmigo» (2002) and «Necesito un amor» (2003). The latter received a nomination for Best Contemporary Tropical Album at the 2004 Latin Grammy Awards. His approach incorporated accordion into bachata instrumentation and explored versions of the same song in different rhythms.
Ironía and the 2006 awards
In 2005 he released «Ironía» through «Wepa Music» in association with «Urban Box Office». He co-produced its fourteen tracks and presented «Qué ironía» in bachata, ballad, and reggaeton versions. The album reached number one on Billboard’s Top Tropical Albums chart. At the 2006 Billboard Latin Music Awards, he won three awards: Tropical Album of the Year, Male; Tropical Album of the Year, New Artist; and Tropical Airplay Song of the Year, Male, for «Qué ironía». The music video, directed by Juan Basanta, also received a Casandra award.
Albums and collaborations
In 2007 he released «Tú me haces falta», featuring «Maldito amor» and an urban version with Tito El Bambino. The album includes «Me vas a perder», with Fernando Villalona, and «Clasificado», with Papi Sánchez. It was followed by «Mi música... Dos tiempos» (2008) and «Placer y castigo» (2009). His repertoire also includes «A quién le importa», «Mi alma loca», «Soy de llorar», «Vive tu vida», and «Es mejor decir adiós».
Later collaborations include «El cariño es como una flor», with Alex Matos, and «Tontos y locos», with Luis Segura, released in 2019. In 2023 he brought «Mis primeras bachatas» to digital platforms. Introducing the album on his official channel, he explained that it recovered an analog record made in 1998–1999, making it a digital release of material from an earlier stage of his career.
Legacy
Andy Andy’s career traces a transition from merengue orchestras to an international career centered on bachata. His accordion-based recordings, versions of his songs in other rhythms, and work through «Wepa Music» form part of that development, alongside the recognition received by «Necesito un amor» and «Ironía».
