Biography

Antonio González is a Dominican music producer, arranger, bassist, and musical director who has worked across merengue, pop, urban, and tropical music. Musical director of the group Ilegales for many years, he has produced albums for Milly Quezada, Eddy Herrera, and Manny Cruz, and was one of the producers of Eddy Herrera's Latin Grammy-winning album «Novato Apostador» in 2025.

Origins and training

González grew up in a musical household, with parents and siblings who play instruments, and began playing in church. He graduated from the Conservatorio Nacional de Música and says his training combined formal study with what he learned playing with groups such as Ilegales and Pavel Núñez. At nineteen he started working with Vladimir Dotel of Ilegales, whom he calls his godfather in music, and he has remained with the group as its musical director.

Production and direction

As a producer he has worked on the albums of Ilegales, including «Tropicalia» and «Otra Atmósfera», which features El Alfa; Milly Quezada; Rubby Pérez; and Manny Cruz, whose songs include «Dominicano de Corazón». He produced Miriam Cruz's «Yo Soy la Mala» and Jandy Ventura's tribute to his father Johnny Ventura, «El Legado del Caballo», and contributed to the tropical tracks of a Carlos Vives album. He has also written lyrics for artists including Andrés Cepeda, Chayanne, and Manny Cruz.

Beyond the studio he has been musical director for Tercer Cielo, Zion & Lennox, and the band of Mozart La Para, produced the musical portions of several Premios Soberano, including as the youngest producer in the show's history when he first did so at 28, and made music for Premio Lo Nuestro and the Premios Juventud, where in 2023 Ilegales performed two musical numbers he directed. He arranged, programmed, and mixed for Maluma at the LOS40 Music Awards and worked on a merengue version of Ricardo Arjona's music in 2023.

Latin Grammy recognition

In 2019 he was nominated for the Latin Grammy again, for Ilegales' «Tropicalia» and for the first album he produced for Milly Quezada. By 2022 he counted seven nominations and by September 2025 thirteen, along with two Guinness records and an ASCAP award, by his own account. His 2025 nominations were for Milly Quezada's live album recorded at the Teatro Nacional to mark 45 years of her career, which he recorded with a separate crew, and for Eddy Herrera's «Novato Apostador», which won the Latin Grammy for Best Merengue/Bachata Album that November; the production credits on it are shared with Manuel Tejada, Junior Cabrera, Edwin García, Moisés Sánchez, and Juan Daniel Montero.

In September 2026 he was part of two more nominated albums: Techy Fatule's «Chula», on which he co-produced «Nada», and Covi Quintana's «Oye Eta Vaina», produced by Ronny Cruz, for which he took part in the recording engineering.

Live events

In July 2026 he was music producer of the opening ceremony of the Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo, and he produced «Suntan Caribe 2026» with Maridalia Hernández and José Antonio Molina. In September 2026 he was musical director of the «Dinastía Rosario» tour of Los Hermanos Rosario in the United States.

Legacy

González is one of the most recurrent producers in the Latin Grammy categories for Dominican merengue and bachata, and his work spans both traditional merengue and pop and urban projects.
