Checho Rosario is a Dominican merengue singer, songwriter and bandleader. He is the son of Toño Rosario, and he leads his own orchestra rather than working inside anyone else’s.

The apprenticeship

He did not begin at the front. He spent a year singing coro in his father’s orchestra — standing behind the man whose name he carries, doing the least visible job on the stage — before stepping out as a soloist.

He served an unusually long apprenticeship for the child of a star, and Dominican audiences noticed it. When he debuted with his own orchestra on Telemicro’s De Extremo a Extremo, the reaction was that the dynasty had produced a professional rather than an heir.

The repertoire

Te Picay, Toy Bonita, Suave Lento, Todo Contigo and El Gallo are his own. Tramposa came in 2026 and moved further than anything before it.

The rest of the set is his father’s: Vengo Acabando, Bonifacio, El Lápiz, Disculpa. Singing those in front of people who know every word is the hardest test available to him, and it is the one he chose to take first.

The dynasty

The family is an institution. His father and his uncle Rafa Rosario both came out of Los Hermanos Rosario, and the second generation is now working on both sides of it — Checho from Toño’s branch, his cousin Rafely Rosario from Rafa’s.

The two get compared constantly. They are close in age, they came up at the same moment, and they are doing the same job from opposite ends of the same surname.
