There is a kind of singer without whom the golden age of merengue cannot be explained: the orchestra journeyman, the voice who went into the studio whenever a session needed doing. Henry Castro was one of the good ones. Across the 1980s his name appears on albums by Luis Ovalles, Bonny Cepeda and Los Vecinos — before he took the step every orchestra singer dreams of and put his own name at the top of the sleeve. The digital age eventually gave his work back to him, but the records that made him are the ones that credit him by name.
The orchestra years
His documented recording career opens with Luis Ovalles y su Orquesta: on «Super Merengues» (1981, Memphis Records) he is credited as a vocalist alongside Charlie Amarante, and Dominican press still lists him among the singers who passed through Luis Ovalles's orchestra. In 1985 he was with Bonny Cepeda y su Orquesta on «Noche De Discotheque» (RCA International), again credited as a vocalist — the album carries «Tú Con Él», the recording fans now circulate under his name. A year later he was in New York, singing backing vocals with Milly, Jocelyn y Los Vecinos on «Special Delivery» (1986). Three orchestras, three different jobs: lead voice, featured voice, and the discipline of the chorus.
His own orchestra
In 1987 he made the step the sideman years had prepared: «Con Amor» (Valette Records), the debut LP of Henry Castro y su Orquesta — “mi primer L.P.”, as he wrote in his own sleeve note, with a Bronx booking address printed on the cover. The record holds his signature song, «Noche De Brujería», alongside «La Chinita», «Eres» and «Gaviota». A second LP, «Henry Castro y su Orquesta» (1989, J&N Records), added «Tesoro Mío» and «El Cariño Es Como Una Flor», and singles and compilation cuts kept his name in the New York merengue circuit into the mid-1990s.
Still recording
The streaming era brought the catalog back. From 2023 his own-orchestra repertoire returned in digital reissues — «Noche de Brujería» in both merengue and bachata versions — alongside newer titles such as «Hijo Mío», «Santo Domingo» and «La Quiero Pa' Mí», and a 2026 mini-documentary revisited the places where his career began. Four decades after the Ovalles sleeve first printed his name, the voice is still working.
Legacy
Henry Castro's legacy is written in other men's orchestras as much as in his own: he belongs to the generation of professional voices who carried merengue's golden age from Santo Domingo to New York, credited on records by Luis Ovalles, Bonny Cepeda and Los Vecinos before leading his own band. «Noche De Brujería» remains the performance that bears his name — and, fittingly, it is still being reissued in his voice.
