Biography

Julio Swing is a Dominican merengue típico accordionist and arranger, a member of El Grupaso and, before it, of Urbanda for fourteen years. He is from Sajoma, in Villa González, Santiago province, where his father played güira; he has said the instrument runs in his family and that he grew up around it. He studied accordion under Lupe Valerio, whose students also include Francis Lantigua, El Toro Negro, and La India Canela.

In October 2025 he left Urbanda together with the singer Jorge Lewis and the percussionist Ronald Tambora to form El Grupaso. He is counted, alongside Genis Swing, among the leading accordionists of the genre's newer generation, and other musicians in the scene have described him as one of its pillars, both as a player and as a teacher of younger accordionists.
