Kerubanda is a Dominican merengue típico band led from the accordion by Kerube Ortiz. It has been working continuously for close to three decades and is among the busiest típico outfits in the country.

Kerube Ortiz

He was born on 22 August in Los Cajuiles, a rural section of Santiago Rodríguez, in the northwest where típico comes from. He took the accordion as a child.

His first conjunto was working in New York City by 1995, with Darío Marte among the musicians — the diaspora circuit, which is where a good part of típico has always earned its living. Kerubanda itself debuted on 18 June in Santiago Rodríguez, at home.

The band

Abran Paso, El Chalecito and Vivo Acomodao are among the records people name. The stretch between 2004 and 2009 is the one típico audiences point at as the band at its peak, but the working life has not stopped since: the argument made about him now is about consistency, party after party, year after year.

The accordionist who sings

What separates him is that he does both jobs. In merengue típico the accordionist leads and a singer fronts; Ortiz has put more of his own hits across in his own voice than almost anyone else who plays the instrument, which collapses two roles that the genre normally keeps apart.

He belongs to the traditional side of an argument the genre has been having with itself. El Prodigio is on the other, and the two of them, along with Geovanny Polanco, are how típico has staged the question of how far it should move.
