La Gran Mawon is a Dominican Afro-Caribbean fusion collective formed in Santo Domingo's Colonial Zone in 2011. Its music brings Afro-Dominican rhythms including palo, gagá, congo and sarandunga together with reggae, rock and other contemporary sounds. Black Dominican musical heritage is central to the group's repertoire.
From jam sessions to a collective
The band grew out of nighttime jam sessions in the public squares of the Colonial Zone. Its continuing original members included guitarist and composer Mítiko, singer Zahir and MC Gato. The lineup later expanded, with the group's interviews documenting singers, bassists, drummers and percussionists across different periods. In a 2013 interview, Mítiko explained that «mawon» comes from Haitian Creole and evokes the maroon; the collective made that idea part of its artistic identity.
Early recordings
Its first single was «Fuego Petró» in 2013. In August 2016 the group released «La Gran Mawon», a seven-track self-titled record that includes «La Culebra», a song associated with Mítiko's writing. The group performed in New York the following year. Its 2019 singles included «Melancolia Tropical» and «Candela Pa Lo Pie», the latter presented as a blend of gagá and jazz.
«Radio Katharsis» and live work
Following «Gana (sillita de guano)» in 2020 and «Morena De Lu» in 2021, La Gran Mawon released the ten-track album «Radio Katharsis» on September 29, 2023. The record includes «Te Doy Seguro» with Vakeró. In February 2024, the group joined Xiomara Fortuna and Yasser Tejeda for a Rutgers University event on Afro-Dominican music. It also performed at Santo Domingo's «Isle of Light» festival that year.
Legacy
From its first jam sessions through recorded albums and performances abroad, La Gran Mawon has treated Afro-Dominican rhythms as living music. Its changing lineup and recordings document a collective approach that connects Caribbean traditions with Santo Domingo's contemporary alternative scene.
