Biography
Lenny Santos, also known as Len Melody, was born on 24 October 1979 in the Bronx, New York, to Dominican parents. A guitarist, composer and producer, he co-founded the bachata group Aventura and is widely credited as the architect of its sound and a pioneer of urban bachata.
Los Tinellers to Aventura
Santos wanted to play bass, like his brother Max Santos, but took up guitar instead, citing Antony Santos as the artist he first copied note for note before building his own style. In 1995 he, Max, and their friends Romeo Santos and Henry Santos formed Los Tinellers, whose only album went nowhere; the same lineup regrouped as Aventura in 1999. As the group's lead guitarist, producer, arranger, musical director and backing vocalist, Santos added electric-guitar effects, among them tremolo, distortion, harmonizer, flanger, phaser and wah, that had never been used in bachata before, fusing the genre with R&B and hip hop.
Producing Aventura
Santos produced every Aventura album, with Romeo Santos co-producing the group's last three. «Obsesión» (2002) topped charts across Europe and carried the group's sound to an international audience, and his production of «Ella y Yo», with Don Omar, fusing bachata with reggaeton, made him one of the first to bring bachata elements into that genre.
Elvis Martínez and other credits
While working on Aventura's debut, Santos produced, recorded and arranged Elvis Martínez's first two albums, «Todo Se Paga» (1998) and «Directo al Corazón» (1999), together with his brother Max, and taught Elvis to play guitar in the process. His production and songwriting credits since have included Prince Royce, Frank Reyes, Natti Natasha and Karlos Rosé, and, outside Dominican music, Karol G, with whom he performed «El Barco» live on «The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon» in 2021 alongside Romeo Santos's guitarist Chi Requinto.
D'Element, Vena and DNA
With Max he first recorded as D'Element, releasing the single «You & Me», before producing a track for the Xtreme singer Steve Styles and inviting him to form a new group, Vena; their first singles, «Señora» and «Ya No» (2012), were immediate hits, followed by «Corazón de Hierro», with Teodoro Reyes and Frank Reyes, «Dile a Él» and «Por Mentiras». Styles left in 2015 over disputes with the group's manager, and Max stepped away soon after; Santos kept the project going, releasing «El Final» with Mike Stanley, and in 2018, with the singer J Love, relaunched it as DNA Latin Group, on which Max later rejoined for the single «Soy Tu Delirio».
Legacy
Santos released a solo album, «Lenny Santos... Aventurero», in 2012, and has continued as musical director on Aventura's reunion tours while running restaurants and lounges in New York; his electric-guitar sound remains the template later bachata acts have built on, and he is credited, alongside his brother, with opening the genre to a global audience it had never reached before.
