Aventura were a bachata group formed in the Bronx by four sons of Dominican parents: Romeo Santos on lead vocals, Henry Santos on second vocals, Lenny Santos on guitar and Max Santos on bass. Their first record sold five copies. Their farewell tour grossed more than 134 million dollars. In between is the group that turned bachata into stadium music and put it at number one in Italy for sixteen weeks.

Los Tinellers

The four grew up in the South Bronx. Lenny and Max are brothers; Romeo Santos and Henry Santos are cousins, and neither pair is related to the other despite the shared surname. They began as «Banda Sueño» and then «Los Tinellers», the English word teenagers spelled the way Spanish speakers pronounce it, so the neighbourhood could say it. Sources date the formation to either 1993 or 1994.

Their first public opening came on 9 July 1995, at the Bronx Dominican Parade, where Elvin Polanco spotted them and became their first manager. With him they recorded «Trampa de Amor» in 1996 for «Elca Productions». Julio César García renamed them «Aventura», and in 1998 Franklin Romero signed them to «Premium Latin Music».

The sound of Lenny and Max

The bachata they inherited was that of Luis Segura and Antony Santos: clean requinto, bongó, güira and a complaining voice. Lenny Santos ran that requinto through tremolo, distortion, a harmonizer, flanger, phaser and wah, and Max gave the bass a rock and hip-hop phrasing, over arrangements that borrowed from the R&B and rap playing around them. Some critics called it «neo-bachata»; the traditional Dominican circuit took years to accept it, and for a while the group got more radio in Europe than in Santo Domingo.

Lenny produced all five of the group's albums and Romeo Santos co-produced the last three, besides writing nearly the whole repertoire. Lenny also worked outside Aventura: he produced «Todo Se Paga» (1998) and «Directo Al Corazón» (1999) for Elvis Martínez, whom he had taught to play guitar in New York. The singer's stage name came out of a practical problem: Anthony Santos was already Antony Santos, so he took «Romeo».

«Obsesión»

«We Broke the Rules» came out on 2 July 2002 and reached number five on Tropical Albums in the United States, but it was number one in Italy and in France. The single «Obsesión», with Judy Santos on the female vocal, spent sixteen consecutive weeks at number one in Italy and seven in France. Aventura became the first bachata act with a Spanish-language number one across virtually every European territory. The album was certified double gold in France and platinum in Switzerland.

The five albums

In a decade they released five studio albums under the Aventura name.

• «Generation Next» (9 November 1999), the debut, with «Cuándo Volverás».

• «We Broke the Rules» (2 July 2002), the «Obsesión» record.

• «Love & Hate» (18 November 2003), with «Hermanita», the first lead vocal by Henry Santos.

• «God's Project» (26 April 2005), four-times Latin platinum and the first distributed by «Sony Music Latin».

• «The Last» (9 June 2009), the best-selling Latin album of both 2009 and 2010.

«God's Project» opened with the four mothers telling how their sons had started in music and closed on reggaeton with «Ella y Yo», split with «Don Omar»: it was the record that carried them to the general audience. «The Last» spent twenty-three weeks at number one on the Latin chart and left five number ones on Tropical Songs.

Madison Square Garden

On 9 March 2006 they became the first bachata group to sell out the Theater at Madison Square Garden in advance, and on 1 September 2007 they filled the main arena, 20,000 seats, with Antony Santos and Héctor Acosta “El Torito” among the guests. That night produced «Kings of Bachata: Sold Out at Madison Square Garden», eight-times Latin platinum. The same year they were inducted into the «Bronx Walk of Fame».

The split and the two returns

In 2011 they announced a pause to attend to individual projects; the last concert of that stage was on 7 March in Venezuela. Romeo Santos signed as a solo act with «Sony Music Latin» a month later, and Lenny and Max put together «Vena», active until 2019 without ever releasing a studio album.

They came back three times. In 2016 they played a run of concerts at the «United Palace». On 5 April 2019 they reappeared by surprise with «Inmortal», their first song together in ten years, inside Romeo Santos's «Utopía»; the tour that took its name opened in February 2020 and the pandemic took 18 of its 39 dates.

The third return was the goodbye. «Brindo Con Agua», released on 2 April 2024, was the group's first single in five years and Henry Santos's first lead vocal since «Hermanita». «Cerrando Ciclos» played 111 concerts, with 910,000 in attendance and 134.7 million dollars, the ninth highest-grossing Latin tour in the history of the «Billboard» Boxscore. They were the only act to sell out three and four consecutive nights at the «Estadio Olímpico Félix Sánchez», where they closed on 5 January 2025.

Legacy

Aventura won more than sixty awards and never won a Grammy or a Latin Grammy: they had a single nomination, in 2007, for best contemporary tropical album for «K.O.B. Live». It is the most discussed absence on their record.

Bachata went global in the 2000s through two doors: Monchy & Alexandra, out of La Romana, and Aventura, out of New York. Juan Luis Guerra 4.40 had shown in 1990 that the genre could travel; Aventura showed that it could fill stadiums. And it set the template for what came behind — the requinto with effects, the English threaded through, the bachata of the diaspora — the one inherited by Prince Royce and much of the generation that followed.
