Biography

Nelly Swing is the stage name of Nelly Francisca Torres (born 1999), a Dominican accordionist and singer from Mao, Valverde, also known as La Rompe Ola. Her career links the Cibao’s dance circuit with the wider audience reached by «Como el perro bebe agua» in 2023. In 2025 she brought her band to Lincoln Center’s «Summer for the City» festival in New York.

From güira to accordion

Her father’s güira playing introduced her to music. Recalling her beginnings in a 2023 interview, she placed them at fourteen and described his encouragement to learn accordion. Her training included Geraldo Marte and Rafaelito Román. She named Fefita la Grande, María Díaz and La India Canela as influences.

Building a performing career

A May 2021 profile by Mel Vásquez dates her debut with her own ensemble to age eighteen and identifies saxophonist Leo Jazz as the musician who helped launch it and gave her the stage nickname. A Mao venue became an early base for weekly performances. That profile also attributes «La ambición» and «No Existe Ninguna» to her as a composer.

A breakthrough in 2023

Listín Diario had included her among the younger women accordionists working in the Cibao by September 2022. «Como el perro bebe agua» subsequently brought her wider attention in 2023. Cayena Magazine credited Andy Peña with the composition and bassist Víctor Rafael with the arrangement, distinguishing their contributions from Nelly’s role as performer.

Speaking on «Cada Vez Más Cerca» in November 2023, she described her initial embarrassment at singing the song and the role of memes in its circulation. She also explained that suggestive material had long been part of her repertoire. The breakthrough extended an existing schedule of performances rather than marking her first work as a musician.

Lincoln Center and the 2025 tour

Lincoln Center scheduled her band for August 1, 2025, at «The Dance Floor» in Josie Robertson Plaza, presenting her as both vocalist and accordionist. Panorama’s subsequent coverage reported the performance as part of her United States tour «El Palo Pelao», produced by «U-Productions Corp».

Recorded repertoire

The digital editions consulted include «La Ambición (En Vivo)» and «Los Algodones (En Vivo)» in 2023, «Ahí E' Que Me Pica (En Vivo)» and «Hasta Hoy» in 2024, and «El Palo Pelao' (En Vivo)» and «Decorando el Árbol» in 2025. These platform dates identify the listed editions; they should not be read as definitive dates for a work’s creation or its first recording.

Legacy

Nelly’s career belongs to the continuing presence of women accordionists in merengue típico. Reporting has documented her combination of instrumental performance, singing and dance, and her move from regional venues to an international cultural program. Her trajectory shows how a viral song can broaden the audience for a performing career already under way.
