Domingo Peguero Tamárez, professionally known as Oro Negro, is a Dominican bandleader, pianist, composer, and arranger born on April 26, 1960, in Los Mina, in what is now Santo Domingo Este. His career encompasses merengue, his own orchestra, and a later period that also includes bachata.
Training and early groups
He grew up under the influence of his grandmother Alicia Pérez Tamárez, director of the Academia Infantil Iris del Valle. He continued at the music conservatory, studying harmony, trumpet, and piano. Piano became his principal instrument. His early experiences included «Los Académicos», a group formed with fellow students from the academy.
He joined «Los Hijos del Rey», working alongside Raulín Rosendo and Fernando Villalona. He received the nickname Oro Negro during that period. He subsequently led his own project, whose activity extended to Puerto Rico and the United States.
Recordings and later work
Releases associated with his orchestra include «Pa’ gozar», «Pa’ todos los gustos», and «Sueño americano». The latter, released in 2002, credits him with composition, arrangements, musical direction, and piano. «La cintura» is part of his merengue repertoire.
In 2012 he began a bachata phase with «Madre», followed by «Only Bachata Collection 1». In 2021 he presented the Christmas merengue «Pa’ la calle», which he composed and arranged. Under the name «Oro Negro Pagozaa», he continued releasing singles including «Que si que si, que no que no» and «Tu boca», the latter with Fernando Villalona, available on streaming platforms in 2024.
Legacy
His career brings together piano performance, arranging, composition, and orchestra leadership. His work across the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and the United States places him within the Caribbean circulation of merengue and its continued presence in digital formats.
