Biography

Oro Negro y Su Orquesta is a merengue ensemble founded and led by Dominican pianist and arranger Domingo Peguero, professionally known as Oro Negro. Its recording career is associated with Puerto Rico’s merengue scene and the dance repertoire circulating between the Caribbean and the United States.

Early recordings

During the 1980s the orchestra released recordings through «Salsoso Records». Titles preserved in digital catalogs include «Oro Negro y Su Orquesta» and «El brillo de Oro Negro y Su Orquesta». Platforms give differing dates for some historical editions; those dates do not, by themselves, establish when the ensemble was founded.

The 1988 release «Merengues originales» is credited to José Medina featuring the orchestra. It documents a period in which the singer and the ensemble were identified separately in the release credits.

Repertoire and later releases

The catalog associated with the ensemble includes «Pa’ gozar» (1995), «Pa’ todos los gustos» (1996), and «Sueño americano» (2002). The latter credits its director with composition, arrangements, musical direction, and piano. Its repertoire includes «La cintura (La cinturita)», «Que será», «Regresarás», and «Ven que estoy pa ti».

Streaming platforms also preserve «Oro Negro de Puerto Rico: Merengue y bachata» and «Oro Negro en pieee!». These releases document both genres in the catalog, although digital publication dates must be distinguished from original recording and release dates.

Legacy

The orchestra belongs to the projects led by Dominican musicians who developed merengue within Puerto Rico and the diaspora. Its history brings together piano-led musical direction, work with vocalists, and a repertoire that remains available through digital platforms.
