Pablo Martínez is a Dominican merengue singer. He is billed as the impeccable voice of merengue, and his career is the story of the orchestras rather than of a solo catalogue.

Early years and formation

He was born in San Cristóbal and raised in Haina, the port town next to it, and showed an ear for singing early.

The orchestras

In 1985 he joined the orchestra of Dionis Fernández, and Dioni Fernández y El Equipo is the outfit he is still most closely identified with — La Mina is from that period. He also sang with Los Hijos del Rey, with Víctor Roque y La Gran Manzana, and with Parada Joven.

Moving between four orchestras of that rank is what a front singer’s career looked like in Dominican merengue: the orchestra is the institution and the voice passes through it.

La Muralla

He eventually fronted his own, Orquesta La Muralla, and La Música is the record from that stretch. The nickname people use for him — a wall of Dominican merengue — comes from the band’s name and then stuck to the man.

He stepped back at one point and returned in 2010, and has kept working since; Loco Loco, arranged by Dioni Fernández, is recent.

Recognition

The Senate of the Republic formally recognised his career in October 2022. Fernando Villalona has called him one of the best voices the country has. When Alex Bueno died in 2026 he was among the merengueros at the funeral — the generation is thinning, and he is one of the ones still standing.
