Los Hijos del Rey was a Dominican merengue orchestra founded in Santo Domingo by musician and bandleader Wilfrido Vargas. It made its public debut in August 1976 at the Estadio Olímpico, on a bill with Fania All-Stars. From its early years, the orchestra brought together young musicians and singers who later built careers of their own, and became a prominent platform in Dominican merengue.
Formation and debut
Tito Kenton recalled that Vargas first envisioned a small seven-member group; the idea of a larger orchestra took shape after conversations between the two. The first lineup included Fernando Villalona and Raulín Rosendo as singers, Bonny Cepeda as musical director and pianist, and the Kenton brothers in the stage lineup. Bassist Johnny Tulanga was among the orchestra’s early members. Trumpeter July Mateo «Rasputín» also played in the group’s early years. That early lineup brought together young lead singers, piano-led musical direction, and a choreographed stage front.
Leadership changes and new voices
In 1978, Bonny Cepeda and the Kenton brothers went their separate way and formed Bonny con Kenton, the precursor to Los Kenton. After Cepeda’s departure, Dioni Fernández took over the orchestra’s musical direction and remained with Los Hijos del Rey until 1980. In his account, he said he then joined Sandy Reyes, who had left Wilfrido Vargas’s orchestra; record executive Bienvenido Rodríguez proposed bringing them together, and Jackie Núñez Rico suggested the name El Equipo. The project was initially presented as «Sandy, Dioni y El Equipo». The group continued with changing singers and musicians: Rubby Pérez joined in the early 1980s, and Sergio Vargas later became a prominent voice on its recordings. Those departures marked the shift from the original lineup to successive generations of singers and musicians.
Recordings and career
The early albums featured Villalona and Rosendo as lead singers. In later years, the orchestra recorded for different labels with changing vocalists, including releases billed to Sergio Vargas y Los Hijos del Rey. Its recordings reflect those changing lineups and the different stages of the orchestra’s career.
In a later lineup led by Sergio Vargas, singer Diómedes Núñez joined the orchestra and recorded «Balsié» with the group. Núñez made his debut with the orchestra as a fourteen-year-old. A later Karen Records release was credited to Thony Medrano y Los Hijos del Rey.
Legacy
The history of Los Hijos del Rey is reflected in its different eras and in the careers of artists who passed through the orchestra, including Fernando Villalona, Raulín Rosendo, Bonny Cepeda, Dioni Fernández, Los Kenton, Rubby Pérez, and Sergio Vargas. The 1976 debut and musicians’ own accounts document an orchestra that combined young lead singers, musical direction, and a stage presence shaped by the Kentons’ work.
