Ravel, known as «El Tipo» and «La Voz Más Tierna del Merengue», is a Dominican singer whose career is closely connected with New York’s Dominican music scene. His repertoire brings together romantic merengue, other Caribbean rhythms and melodic popular song.

New York and early bands

He moved to New York in 1974 and performed with several groups. He recorded with «Los Reyes del Caribe» before forming «Los Bravos Bravísimos», associated with songs including «La mazorca de maíz» and «Por nada». In 1984 he adopted the name «Ravel y su Orquesta». Recordings, dances and tours connected his work with Dominican communities in the United States.

Records and repertoire

His own label, «Camino Records», supported the recording period associated with «Como tú lo querías» and «Llegó el tipo». He later worked with «RMM» and «Merengazo Records»; «Alma, ritmo y pueblo» appeared in 1997. Songs associated with his singing include «El guineo», «No basta» and «Yo te quiero así».

A voice across styles

On his official channel, Ravel describes a repertoire spanning romantic merengue, salsa, bolero, ballads and bachata. The channel preserves performances of «Herido de amor», «Tu alma golondrina» and «Ay, pena, penita, pena», as well as stage appearances and medleys. His approach combines melodic singing with arrangements suited to different Caribbean dance styles.

Legacy

Ravel’s career belongs to the history of Dominican merengue in New York. In 2018 he contributed to the «Merengue NY» discussion organised by the local «Acroarte» chapter and performed in the city’s tribute to Joseíto Mateo. His recordings and performances connect romantic song, the dance orchestra and Dominican audiences abroad.
