Biography

T.Y.S — Steven Domínguez Carmona, born on 11 May 1983 in Long Island, New York — is a Dominican rapper and independent producer working from Santo Domingo. He is one of the most widely heard rappers the country has, and he produces most of what he releases himself.

Introspective rap with a street edge

He describes the work as introspective rap and trap with a street edge and a strategic mind behind it, and he is explicit that he is not making music for the moment: he wants a sonic philosophy where each song works as a piece of a larger message.

The statement is an uncommon one in Dominican urban music, where the economics push hard towards the single that works this month, and building an argument across a catalogue is the harder bet.

The records

Aquile is the biggest thing he has made. Around it sit Jordan, Enemy, Resultado and Kanye, and the Trono remix cut with Rochy RD — the record that put two of the heavier names in Dominican rap on the same track.

The albums are Estado Mental and El Rap Dominicano, the second a title that states the claim plainly. He has kept releasing steadily: Gigante, Sueño and OMSA are the recent ones, alongside features with Hache, N.I.T.O and Big O.

Los Sufridos

In 2023 he formed Los Sufridos with Cromo X and Mítiko, a project centred on urban bachata. The group’s «Lleno Contigo» with Antony Santos appeared in 2024; its lyrics credit T.Y.S under his personal name, Steven Domínguez.

From rapper to businessman

He has moved into the business side of the music, and the long-form interviews he gives now are framed around that shift rather than around the records. For an artist who came up independent, owning the apparatus is the logical end of the same argument.
