Alex Mansilla is a Dominican arranger, producer and musical director. He fronted Cañaveral in the late eighties and has spent the decades since writing the charts other people’s records are built on.

The song that carries his name was not his and was not first his. Luis "Terror" Días wrote it; Rubby Pérez cut the first version on a 45 for Karen Records, and it did not take. The label passed it to a new project, Alex Mansilla & Cañaveral, and there it became a total success.

That is an unusually clear case of what an arranger does. Same song, same composer, different room — and the second reading is the one the country kept. It sits at number fifty-nine in the standard hundred-merengues-of-a-decade list, credited to Alex Mansilla y Cañaveral, 1989.

In 2013 El Prodigio rebuilt it again as a campo arrangement, which makes three lives for one Luis Días song.

Cañaveral

The 1989 album is the group’s record: No Voy A Mover Un Dedo, Isabel, Un Amor Como El Cristo, Apechao, Sueño Con Ella, Emeteria and Querembe alongside the hit. He arranged it himself.

Cañaveral belongs to the stretch when merengue was absorbing everything around it, and the band is still named in the same breath as the orchestras of the period.

The desk

The second career is longer than the first. He arranges and directs for other artists — Wilfrido Vargas and Eddy Herrera among the recent ones — and Premios Soberano nominated him as arranger in the Merengue del Año category in 2026.

His brother Luis Mansilla mixes and masters. Their two names appear together in the credits of record after record, one writing the arrangement and the other finishing the sound, which is a rarer division of labour than it sounds: most Dominican productions hire those two jobs from different places.
