Biography
Raffy Díaz is the stage name of Rafael Díaz Ulloa, a Dominican singer and bandleader whose work spans orchestral merengue, merengue típico and bachata. His career developed through a succession of established ensembles before he formed an independent project.
Early life and first performances
Born on January 19 in Santiago de los Caballeros, he spent part of his childhood and adolescence in Guananico, Puerto Plata. He began his musical training with «Rondalla Monseñor Romero». His professional debut came with Koki Acosta’s orchestra at Altos de Chavón, where he sang «Es un ángel».
Orchestras and Rokabanda
While working with Henry Hierro, his performance of «Ahí» helped establish the nickname «Marucha». He subsequently joined Wilfrido Vargas and, in the 1990s, Pochy y su Cocoband. Following Kinito Méndez’s departure, he took a leading role in Rokabanda, performing songs such as «Donde quiera me caso», «Me muero chin a chin» and «Corió». He also worked with Toño Rosario and Conjunto Quisqueya.
Merengue típico and an independent direction
In 2004 Díaz joined José El Calvo’s group as a singer, remaining for seven years. He launched his own project in 2012, bringing modern arrangements to merengue típico. Bachata became another strand of his work through «Flor dormida» and «Nada». Later repertoire includes «Calma», «La mala», «La mitad», «Pura bachata» and «Se me fue», alongside boleros and ballads.
Legacy
Known as «El Más Versátil», Díaz connects the experience of the large merengue orchestras with the típico performance circuit and bachata singing. The Central Bank Employees’ Club documented that breadth of repertoire at a 2024 concert. His connection with Guananico also continues through his artistic identity and music videos filmed in the community where he grew up.
