Marco Hernández is a Dominican producer, arranger, composer, pianist and vocalist from Santo Domingo. A member of Juan Luis Guerra's Grupo 440 from 1987 to 1999, he also developed an independent career through «Que hable la música», «FincaFusión» and production work on «Para ti» and José Feliciano's «Señor Bachata».

Classical study, rock and jingles

His mother was a classical pianist and conservatory teacher who ran the «Instituto Musical Juan Sebastián Bach». Hernández studied piano and other musical subjects as a child, and his maternal uncle, Jorge Taveras, brought him and his sister Carolina into studio singing. Advertising jingles and backing vocals became an early source of professional work.

He played with the rock bands «Nasty» and «Friends», alongside Roger Zayas-Bazán and Alex Mansilla. The groups performed British and American rock before turning toward original material. After beginning psychology studies at INTEC, he chose music and studied piano performance at Berklee in 1986.

Twelve years with 4.40

Following Maridalia Hernández's departure, Hernández auditioned for the group. He and Milagros Taveras joined a formation that became a vocal quintet. He later shared its front line with Juan Luis Guerra, Roger Zayas-Bazán, Mariela Mercado and, subsequently, Adalgisa Pantaleón.

Alongside singing, he contributed piano, keyboards and ideas for instrumental sounds in the studio. Hernández has explicitly distinguished that collaboration from the authorship of Guerra's arrangements: Guerra remained the arranger and made the final musical decisions. Both Hernández and Zayas have stated that they did not take part in the recording of «Fogaraté» (1994).

He left the regular group in 1999 and recorded «Que hable la música», released in 2000 by «BMG». Héctor Aníbal participated as a guest singer. The album introduced «El Sabordín», the playful character through which Hernández explored a mixture of tropical rhythms.

Production and recognition

His work with Juan Luis Guerra continued after his departure from the touring group. He coproduced «Para ti» (2004), contributing piano, keyboards and backing vocals. The Latin Recording Academy credits him with wins for that album in 2005 and for José Feliciano's «Señor Bachata» in 2008. The latter album also won the Grammy for Best Tropical Latin Album in 2009.

Hernández has described production as the work of giving a project a coherent sound, beyond arranging individual songs. His method combines composition, instrumental performance and programming, with specialist engineers handling recording and mixing tasks.

«FincaFusión» and personal songwriting

Based in Miami since 1990, he developed «Sabordín Music Productions» for musical production, arrangements, advertising and documentary work. «FincaFusión» brought together his experience of rock, jazz, classical music, bachata and merengue.

In interviews in 2025 he also described «Personal», a reflective project built around his own experiences and largely composed on guitar. He performed and produced the material himself and had presented «El amor» in a video.

Legacy

Hernández's career spans Dominican rock bands, studio vocals, the international development of 4.40 and independent production. His work on «Para ti» and «Señor Bachata», together with his own projects, documents a practice that connects composition, keyboards and musical production.
