Héctor Elpidio Acosta Restituyo, known as El Torito, is a Dominican singer, composer, producer and politician, born in Bonao on 23 May 1967. He spent fifteen years as the lead voice of Los Toros Band before a contested departure in 2005 opened a solo career that carried him from merengue into bachata and bolero. He has been senator for Monseñor Nouel since 2020, the first Dominican artist elected to the chamber. In 2024 he was treated for stage 3 nasopharyngeal cancer; he returned to the stage in 2025 and declared himself fully recovered in May 2026.

Bonao and the first groups

He was born in the community of Los Arroces and grew up in the San Pablo barrio of Bonao, the elder of two sons of Elpidio Acosta, a schoolteacher. He sang in the choir of the San Antonio church as a boy while training for what he expected would be a career in baseball. In 1982 he took first place in a voice contest run by a local radio station, then spent two years with «La Renovación Quisqueyana», an amateur group he assembled out of the choir, before leaving for «Los Gentiles» — then the most polished band in Bonao — where he sang and played bass.

Los Toros Band

Late in the 1980s he passed through Los Hermanos Rosario; accounts differ as to whether this was a two-month trial or a stint as backup voice covering for Toño Rosario, whose timbre his own resembled. He spent another two months with Henry Hierro. It was at one of the group's dates in Bonao that the producer Gerardo Díaz, known as el Toro, heard him sing and offered him a place in a band that did not yet exist.

Acosta joined the project in 1990, but only to record: Díaz kept the group off stage while the debut album «¡Se soltaron los toros!» ran for a year on Dominican radio, holding the release back to build the wait. The band played in public for the first time on 4 May 1991, with Acosta out front as lead voice and leader, and the nickname El Torito dates from those years. Henry Jiménez arranged «La Morenita» for the group in 1991.

Across roughly fifteen years, and albums including «Toromanía», «Serenata», «Indetenibles» and «Raíces» — the last a deliberate return to vernacular and salon merengue — the band put «A pasito lento», «La nena del jean», «Las mujeres lo bailan bien», «Perdóname la vida», «Llegó tu marido», «Quizás sí, quizás no», «La Chiflera», «El mujerón» and «Esa morenita» into circulation.

He left in 2005 over the group's finances, saying he had never been told what a tour earned and had received nothing from Dominican record sales. A second trigger was the label's anger at his clearing a Los Toros song for a radio announcer without asking them; his answer was that no contract existed to violate. A public fight followed with «Los Toros Records», the company run by Gerardo Díaz and his brother Juan Pablo, which barred him from performing until it was settled and which he accused of pressuring stations not to play his promotional singles. He reached an agreement in February 2006 and paid it off over two years.

Héctor Acosta & su Orquesta

He presented his own orchestra on 8 March 2006 and debuted it at the Jet Set in Santo Domingo. «Sigo siendo yo» followed on 24 October and had five tracks on Dominican radio at once — «¿Cómo me curo?», «Primavera azul», «Lo que tiene ella» and «Me voy», the last a bachata rewrite of an Aventura merengue written by Romeo Santos. He had already cut a merengue típico record, «Típico», for «J&N Records» in 2004, but it was here that the press began calling him a bachatero, and the reason was mechanical rather than stylistic: barred from performing the merengues that had made him, he had bachata left.

The records then charted steadily in the United States. «Mitad / Mitad» (2008) reached number 5 on the Tropical Albums chart and went gold, carrying «Sin perdón» and «Con qué ojos». «Simplemente... El Torito» (2009) and «Oblígame» (2010) — the source of «Me duele la cabeza» — each peaked at number 2 and each went gold. «Con el corazón abierto» (2012) reached number 3. «Merengue y sentimiento» (2015) produced «Amorcito enfermito», written and arranged by Romeo Santos, which topped the Tropical Airplay chart in 2016. «Este soy yo» arrived on 20 May 2022.

He worked outward from merengue and bachata throughout: «Me vio llorar» with the Colombian Jorge Celedón, his first vallenato; «Se me va la voz» with Alejandro Fernández; «Perdóname» with Pepe Aguilar; «La Original Banda El Limón» and Manny Manuel on «Merengue y sentimiento»; and «Esta Vida» alongside the late Yoskar Sarante on the tribute record «Yoskar Inolvidable». He played the United Palace in New York on 9 April 2005 and returned there in September 2006 for «Área 809»; guested at Aventura's Madison Square Garden concert in September 2007 and came back to the Garden for two nights in August 2009 alongside Juanes, Alejandro Sanz, Enrique Iglesias, Luis Fonsi, Laura Pausini and José Alberto "El Canario"; played the Teatro Coliseo in Buenos Aires in May 2011; and headlined Carnegie Hall on 8 October 2017.

Two suits from his former manager Hugo Paulino Tineo bracket the solo years. The first, filed on 18 March 2007 for 22 million pesos over wrongful dismissal and unpaid benefits, was dismissed. The second, for defamation, was declared inadmissible by the Second Chamber of the Supreme Court in October 2022 — a ruling that went on to set national doctrine on how criminal defamation by electronic means must be prosecuted.

Politics

A member of the Partido Revolucionario Moderno, Acosta was artistic adviser to Hipólito Mejía's government between 2000 and 2004 and campaigned for Miguel Vargas Maldonado in 2008, whose slogan took up a phrase of his, «¿Tiene mieo?». In July of that year the Obama campaign named him a spokesman to turn out Hispanic voters in Miami and New York. At «Premios Lo Nuestro» on 17 February 2011, while presenting an award, he unfurled a yellow pennant reading 4% — the share of gross domestic product Dominican campaigners were demanding for education.

He announced a senate run in August 2013, entered the race for Monseñor Nouel in 2016 and withdrew, then won the seat in the general election of 5 July 2020 and took office on 16 August. Johnny Ventura and Sergio Vargas had sat as deputies; Acosta is the first Dominican artist to reach the Senate. He was re-elected on 19 May 2024 with 44,455 votes, becoming the first to hold the seat for two consecutive terms.

His legislative interest has stayed close to his trade: a music law creating an Instituto de la Música, a single national artists' registry under the Ministerio de Cultura, and a social-security scheme for the arts industry, all three routed to him by the bandleader Pochy Familia on the grounds that he was the one who knew what musicians go through. On the politics itself he has been unsentimental: «No soy político, soy un comunitario».

In September 2021 his name appeared in the wiretap section of the public prosecutor's file in Operación Falcón, a narcotics and money-laundering case. He denied having been summoned, backed the investigation, and acknowledged that one of the men cited had briefly been his driver in 2007. He was never charged.

Cancer and return

He traces the illness to 18 December 2023, after a show. In January 2024 he said publicly only that he had health matters needing immediate attention, and he asked for his first round of chemotherapy to fall on 27 February — Dominican independence day — so that the anniversary would always be a national one. He told the public in late May, mid-set at the Coca-Cola Music Hall in San Juan; musicians who had been beside him for years did not know. The diagnosis was stage 3 nasopharyngeal cancer on the right side of the neck, and the course ran to sixteen rounds of chemotherapy and thirty-five of radiotherapy. He rang the bell on 13 July 2024 and kept sitting in the Senate throughout. October scans came back clear.

«El cáncer no es una enfermedad, es un mensaje», he said a year after the first infusion.

He announced four concerts on 13 January 2025 under the title «Gracias Dominicanos» and opened the run in Higüey, reaching Bonao on 28 June. «Se Puede», written by Nelson de la Olla and arranged by Isaías Leclerc, came out in March 2025, followed by «Si No Me Falla El Corazón» in May. At «Premios Soberano» on 18 March 2026 he took merengue of the year for «Se Puede» and merenguero of the year. «La Más Dura» followed on 14 May, and on 23 May, his fifty-ninth birthday, he returned to the Coca-Cola Music Hall — the room where he had made the diagnosis public — to announce that he was fully recovered.

On 6 August 2026, at «Premios Dominicanísimo» in Boston, Gerardo and Juan Pablo Díaz walked on stage to hand him the «Leyenda Musical Dominicanísimo» trophy. Twenty years after the contract fight, the three embraced in front of the room. He had already taken the brothers' side when the «Los Toros Band» and «Los Toros Records» names were auctioned for 250,000 pesos to cover a debt to former musicians, refusing to bid on the grounds that the name belonged to them.

Recognition

ACROARTE named him El Gran Soberano, its highest distinction, on 9 April 2013, at the first edition held under the «Premios Soberano» name. His record with the organisation runs from the «Premios Casandra» years to the present:

• 2007 — orchestra of the year, merengue of the year for «¿Cómo me curo?», and album of the year

• 2009 — album of the year for «Mitad / Mitad»

• 2011 — six nominations, tied with Johnny Ventura's generation of merengueros as the most-nominated act of the night; won merengue orchestra over Eddy Herrera, Fernando Villalona, Los Hermanos Rosario and Toño Rosario

• 2019 — orchestra of the year

• 2026 — merengue of the year and merenguero of the year

He has taken Latin Grammy nominations for «Oblígame» and «Merengue y sentimiento» in the contemporary tropical album category and for «Este soy yo» in the merengue/bachata category, without winning, and three of his albums are certified gold.

Legacy

His exit from Los Toros Band and the litigation that followed is one of the documented Dominican cases of a lead singer separating from a producer-owned group and sustaining a career alone. The stretch from 2024 to 2026 is a second one: a singer in his late fifties who lost his voice to cancer treatment, got it back, and was handed his old mentors' trophy for it.
