RL & Vanessa are a Christian urban duo from La Romana, made up of RL El Moreno and Vanessa. They work in merengue urbano and Dominican urban styles, and are known above all for narrative songs — records that tell a story across a single track, and sometimes across two.

The duo

The pair recorded early material credited as RL El Moreno featuring Vanessa, including Ella Llora, before settling into the joint billing they use now. They belong to La Romana, the eastern sugar town that has produced an unusual amount of Dominican Christian music: Revelación Maranatha formed there in 1986 and Alfareros in 1995, both from a different part of the same broad scene.

Songs that tell stories

Their best-known work is Dalila, which follows a young Christian man trying to resist the advances of a woman outside the faith. It was popular enough that they wrote a second instalment continuing the story — an unusual move in a genre that rarely returns to its own characters.

The approach runs through the catalogue. Señor Policía, Cristiano de Cartón, Manda Un Primo, Vamos a Darle Palo and Mentira To are titles from ordinary speech rather than devotional vocabulary, and the songs behind them tend to work as scenes or arguments rather than as praise. Cristiano de Cartón — a cardboard Christian — names the target directly.

Recordings

Éxito and Sueña both appeared in 2019, alongside the album Cristiano de Cartón; Señor Policía dates from 2016. Cristiano Soy Yo was recorded with R Nova.

The pace has picked up sharply in recent years. La Morena (Holy Bible) came in 2025 with a live version, followed by Desahogo, a remix of El Volverá and Vanessa (En Vivo) in the same year, then Vamos a Darle Palo and Manda Un Primo in 2026, and Mentira To, recorded live, in June 2026.

Gangster de Dios

RL & Vanessa appear across the Gangster de Dios series, a run of posse-cut EPs assembled by Propiedad de Dios with Natan El Profeta and El Philippe. They feature on the third edition alongside Peter Metivier, Randy SB, R Nova and Ricky Webber; on the fourth with Lizzy Parra, Ander Bock, Misael J, Brayan Booz, MR. Yeison and others; and on Gangster de Dios Mundial with Aposento Alto, Chelo Home and Néstor Ortega, that edition assembled with Rubinsky RBK.

Those records are the clearest map of the Dominican Christian urban scene that exists — a recurring cast of two dozen artists who record together repeatedly, and in which this duo is a fixture.
